Sunstar – a global company with many years of experience in development and innovation of oral care products.
Founded in 1941 by Kunio Kaneda in Osaka, Japan, Sunstar Inc. developed rapidly to a worldwide operating conglomerate. The still family owned company operates in the business fields of mouth and body care, health and beauty care, environment and also automotive components. The focus is on oral care - especially in Europe. The philosophy of the continuously growing global concern with ca. 3.800 employees: “Strive always to enhance the health and well-being of people everywhere”.
In 1991 the Sunstar group build up the business in Germany as John O. Butler GmbH with a broad range of oral health products. The company name finally changed in March 2008 to Sunstar Deutschland GmbH.
Since some years now Sunstar focusses on the European market. In 2002 the European headquarter was established in Ecublens near Lausanne, Switzerland. Sunstar’s European subsidiaries are located in Germany, Sweden, France, Spain and Italy. The other countries are in charge of local distributors.
In 1946 Sunstar started as a pioneer in oral healthcare by producing toothpaste in metal tubes. Since then Sunstar expanded its oral hygiene product range by own innovative product developments based on latest research, acquisitions and co-operations with similar industries. In 1988, Sunstar acquired the American John O. Butler company group. The dentist Dr. John O. Butler, founder of John O. Butler Company, was a pioneer in the development of toothbrushes that allow brushing which is gentle to gums and offered also solutions for special tooth and gum problems.
Sunstar’s own brands GUM® (premium oral care products developed by dentists for everybody’s needs) and Butler® (innovative products for exclusive use in dental offices) are linked to the company’s history. Despite the already broad range of oral hygiene products Sunstar continuously enhances both brands with its own research and development department.
In 1977, the Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion was founded. It has own hospitals in Japan, funds the further investigation of the relationship between oral and systemic health and closely collaborates with the WHO. |
